Apple's digital store iTunes released its biggest selling apps of 2014. Three categories have been considered which include the 10 top grossing apps, the 10 top paid apps, and the 10 top free apps. Each category has an iPhone and an iPad version.

Minecraft - Pocket Edition was the number one paid app for both the iPhone and the iPad. Facebook is the number one free app for the iPhone while Skype is the number one free app for the iPad. Candy Crush Saga and Clash of Clans were the top two apps for both the iPhone and the iPad. Candy Crush Saga is the top grossing app for the iPhone and is followed by Clash of Clans. When it comes to the iPad, it is the Clash of Clans which made it to the top spot followed by Candy Crush Saga.

Two of the top grossing apps for the iPhone in 2014 were released this year. These are Farm Heroes Saga (number 4) and Kim Kardashian: Hollywood (number 5). The other four top grossing apps came out in 2012. Three came out in 2013. Match.com, which ranked tenth, was released on the App Store in 2009.

For the iPad, two of its top grossing apps in 2014 were also released this year. Once again, Farm Heroes Saga made it to the list and ranked fifth. The other app is Boom Beach. There are two apps which originally came out in 2013. There are four that were released in 2012. One app was released each in 2011 and in 2010.

It should also be noted that the end-of-year rankings revealed the popularity of messaging apps in the chart. Occupying the top three spots are Facebook Messenger, WhatsApp and Snapchat.

Facebook Messenger is the most downloaded free app on Apple's iPhone which may be attributed to the social network's push that its users install the separate app. The other apps that made it to the list of the top free iPhone apps include Facebook (ranked 4th), YouTube (ranked 5th), Instagram (ranked 6th), Spotify Music (ranked 7th), Skype for iPhone (ranked 8th), Google Maps (ranked 9th) and Tinder (ranked 10th).

For the iPad, the list for the top free apps is more varied and only includes two messaging apps. Skype for iPad made it to the top spot which is then followed by Facebook Messenger. Other chart toppers, which would start from the 3rd rank down to the tenth, include Netflix, YouTube, Microsoft Word, BBC iPlayer, ITV Player, eBay for iPad, Google Maps, and Calculator for iPad Free.
