Emoji are a big part of today's conversations and they're constantly evolving, improving, and expanding. Next year, iOS devices could boast reversible emoji and many others.

In a mobile-driven era, emoji play a central part of communication. They help users make a point, replace words, express actions, and more. A slew of emojis are already available, and plenty more are about to make their way to the market next year.

Reversible Emoji

According to the latest guidelines proposed by the Unicode Consortium, reversible emoji could be front and center. For those who are not sure what this would entail, reversible emoji means that users would be able to choose which way an emoji is facing. This way, one could have a woman chasing a man, or a man chasing a woman, for instance, and it would make a great difference.

The list is just a draft for now and it's not final by any means, so it could still have additions or removals. For now, the proposed guidelines are in testing and following the feedback, they will be finalized in the first quarter of 2018.

Other Emoji Candidates

In addition to reversible emoji, the proposed guidelines also contain a slew of other proposed emoji that make great candidates. Such emoji include red-haired people with various skin tones, hot faces, cold faces, superhero emoji with both male and female versions, supervillain emoji with both male and female versions, woozy faces, partying faces, smiling faces with three hearts spinning around them, pleading faces with puppy eyes, curly-haired, white-haired, and bald people with various skin tones, various body parts, and clothing items.

There are also new animals such as raccoons and llamas, new food & drink items, a new cracker emoji filed under "activities," new objects, tools, household items, symbols, and more. An infinity symbol and a pirate flag, for instance, could make it to the list of final choices.

Once the list is finalized, Apple and other vendors would get to select which emoji would be reversible on their devices. Currently there are 130 new emoji candidates for Emoji 11.0, but obviously, not all will make the cut.

Based on the timeline for the final list of emoji, Apple's iPhones and iPads could get the reversible emoji and others sometime after September 2018, along with iOS 12 or iOS 12.1. A subsequent macOS update should later bring the new emoji to Macs as well. Of course, Apple's final designs could present slight variations from the emoji depicted in the proposed guidelines.
