Daniel Craig was more than upfront about how he felt about being James Bond. He's still scheduled to have another run as 007 so we'll definitely be seeing him another day but what about director Sam Mendes?

Mendes doesn't exactly give a flat out answer to whether or not he will be on board for the next "James Bond" movie but, even when Craig is in on the project again, he said that he can get out of the next film because he'll probably be doing something else by then.

However, he clarifies that getting out of the next "James Bond" movie should not be treated as something negative, because it's not the same as him saying he doesn't want to do it. Rather, he's going where the next story he wants to tell is.

"There are other stories to tell. I've never felt shy of shifting genres, shifting scales, moving to a movie that's completely unlike the one I'd done before," added Mendes, going to say that, before "Skyfall" and "Spectre," all the movies he's ever directed were absolute polar opposites of the movies directly before them.

He also noted that coming to an end is not necessarily bad. It's just how things naturally progress. Mendes said he grew up on ideas of regeneration, thanks to "Dr. Who." Inserting the idea of regeneration allows the acknowledgment that time passes and that James Bond is not exempt from getting older but it does not kill the franchise.

Instead, it lets a new James Bond be born, with a new director making something completely new. Mendes already has a few ideas in mind on how the franchise can take a totally new direction but is not keen on bringing those to life.

To him, he's done his chapters on the Bond myth. He is not saying that he's not down to write one more but someone else will come along to write the next 10 or 50, "because Bond is strong enough for that, and because there's enough to play with."

So will Mendes be or not be in the next Bond movie? You'll just have to stick around for the next one to find out.
