The Microsoft HoloLens headset has been met with much excitement, but it seems as though Microsoft isn't the only company interested in building it. In fact, Asus has expressed interest in building its own HoloLens headset, making it the first to do so, and it seems as though the company is going ahead with its plans.

Asus isn't discussing details, however, CEO Jerry Shen said on Wednesday during an earnings call that the product should be released at some point next year.

"We think AR (augmented reality) will be very important for people's lives," said Shen in an interview during the call.

It's not yet known if the device will have any official ties to Microsoft's headset. The Microsoft headset will be released as a developer edition that will cost $3,000 in early 2016. Asus was reportedly in talks with Microsoft about building a cheaper version of the device.

It's important to note the distinction between a headset like this, which is an augmented reality headset, and virtual reality headsets like the Oculus Rift or the Samsung Gear VR. Augmented reality generally involves a glass display that can be seen through, allowing the user to see the world around them. Information is then overlaid on that world, making a blend between the real world and a virtual one. Virtual reality, on the other hand, doesn't involve the user being able to see the real world.

Asus is probably best known for its laptops, however, it has been branching out in the past few years, with things like its Zen range of smartphones and tablets. According to Shen, the company even has plans to release a service robot next year, so between that and a potential AR headset, 2016 could be a very exciting year for Asus.
