Sony's PlayStation 4 has consistently beaten Microsoft's Xbox One in terms of sales in the United States since the console was launched. However, that is not the case for October.

The NPD Group said in its monthly report that the Xbox One beat the PlayStation 4 in new physical sales last month. While the report did not share the specific numbers for the sales figures of the consoles, Microsoft itself confirmed its victory over rival Sony.

According to Mike Nichols, the Xbox marketing corporate VP, the strength of the greatest lineup of games in the history of the Xbox drove usage for the Xbox Live network to record heights last month, along with making the Xbox One the best-selling console in the United States with a growth in sales of 81 percent compared to October of last year.

Nichols also highlighted the launch of Halo 5: Guardians, which saw amazing excitement from the gaming franchise's fans leading to critical acclaim and commercial success for the title. Halo 5: Guardians became the best-selling game in the United States for October with the title raking in combined game and hardware sales of over $400 million in its first week alone.

The feat is an even more impressive one when taking into the consideration that Sony dropped the price for the PlayStation 4 for the first time last month, bringing the price of the console down to $350 in line with the cheapest version of the Xbox One.

For the year, the Xbox One has beaten the PlayStation 4 in sales for two out of the first 10 months, and Microsoft is surely hoping that the win in October would give the company and the console momentum as the holiday shopping season draws near.

The competition is heating up even more between the Xbox One and PlayStation 4, which is a good thing for gamers as better deals are surely coming over the holidays.

Overall sales for consoles in October were recorded at $270.3 million, down slightly from the $271.1 million posted in October of last year. A massive 96 percent of hardware sales came as bundles, which is nearly double the figure of 53 percent compared to October of last year.
