Apple has already begun working on the iPhone 7 only three months after the iPhone 6s and iPhone 6s Plus were launched. Although it's not likely we'll see the upcoming new iPhone anytime soon, word has it that Apple is already testing various configurations of its next big thing.

A new rumor coming from the Far East claims Apple is looking at five different iPhone 7 prototypes with various combinations of new technologies that will make their debut in the new smartphone.

G for Games cites a source coming from Weibo who says the prototypes have various configurations of features that include a USB Type-C connector with compatible headsets, wireless charging technology and a dual-camera setup. Reportedly, Apple is also testing multi-Force Touch and fingerprint sensors embedded straight into the display, which goes well with previous rumors that Apple could get rid of the iconic home button and incorporate the Touch ID straight into the display itself.

The source also claims that Apple is looking into AMOLED displays, although earlier reports point to a 2018 launch for an iPhone with an AMOLED display. Well-connected Apple tipster and KGI Securities analyst Ming-Chi Kuo doesn't believe the iPhone 7 will have the new display onboard. Kuo points to huge investments made by Apple's LCD suppliers and believes that LCD displays are here to stay at least for the next three years.

At this point, it's still too early to tell which of these features Apple will add to the iPhone 7. Even G for Games says its source is not a "certified" Apple insider. However, it is worth noting that we are going into another year after the iPhone S version, which means Apple fans can likely expect a lot of big, new changes to the iPhone.

The iPhone 4, for instance, made a splash with its boxier, flatter design compared to the iPhone 3GS, and the iPhone 5 delivered a 4-inch screen, which was considered large during its time. Of course, it was the iPhone 6 and the iPhone 6 Plus that launched the first Apple phablets last year. Looking at Apple's history of releases, we can certainly expect that whatever it has in store for us with the iPhone 7, it's going to be big.
