Move over Samsung Galaxy Round. A new curved display smartphone challenger, the LG G Flex, is gearing up to throw the gauntlet.

On Monday, October 28, LG officially took the wraps off the LG G Flex smartphone, which boasts the self-healing rear feature.

"Setting a new milestone in the evolution of the smartphone, LG Electronics (LG) officially took the wraps off the LG G Flex, a smartphone curved to follow the contour of the face, the first device to offer such a design in the smartphone market," touts LG in the press release. "The latest device in LG's premium G series, the G Flex incorporates proprietary innovations from other LG companies in the form of the display and battery than have never been seen before. The G Flex also boasts new user experience (UX) features that take advantage of the curved form factor."

However, unlike the Galaxy Round, which is curved from edge to edge, the LG G Flex is curved from top to bottom.

"The LG G Flex is the best representation of how a smartphone should be curved," said Dr. Jong-seok Park, President and CEO of LG Electronics Mobile Communications Company. "The LG G Flex with its distinctive design, innovative hardware and consumer-centric UX represents the most significant development in the smartphone space since smartphone became part of our regular vocabulary."

The LG G Flex features a 6-inch Plastic OLED screen, which is "the world's largest Plastic OLED (POLED) display." However, despite the large size, the screen disappoints with its pixel resolution of  1280 x 720 and a pixel density of 244 ppi.

The phablet measures 160.5 x 81.6 x 7.9 - 8.7mm and weighs 177 gms. The LTE-enabled device houses a powerful Qualcomm Snapdragon 800 (MSM8974) quad-core processor, which is clocked at 2.26GHz. The LG G Flex also packs in 2GB of RAM and 32GB of on-board storage capacity. The curved smartphone also has a 13-megapixel primary camera and a 2.1-meapixel front-facing one.

The LG G Flex also packs in a non-removable 3,500mAh battery and comes pre-loaded with Android 4.2.2 Jelly Bean.

The smartphone also boasts a self-healing coating on the back cover, which is a first for any smartphone. Per LG "the elastic coating has the ability to recover from the daily wear-and-tear scratches and nicks that un-cased smartphones are likely to receive, keeping the G Flex looking newer longer."

The LG G Flex will come in Titan Silver and hit the Korean shelves in November via all three major carriers. Availability for other markets will be announced later. No details of the pricing are currently known.
