Microsoft has just acquired data analytics firm Metanautix as part of the company's ongoing effort to dominate the intelligent cloud market and to allow their customers to further their knowledge on how to benefit from a huge amount of data.

Part of the acquisition plan is to integrate Metanautix into Microsoft's data platform, which will include the company's SQL Server and the Cortana Analytics Suite. According to Microsoft, the world of data analytics is filled with huge challenges as companies struggle to consolidate all of its data and then use it to gain useful insights, promote growth through thoughtful automation and discover exciting opportunities.

"Companies like Shutterfly rely on Metanautix for marketing campaign analytics to find the most effective ways to acquire and keep customers," said Joseph Sirosh, corporate VP, Data Group, Microsoft, in a blog post. "With Metanautix technology, IT teams can connect a diversity of their company's information across private and public clouds, without having to go through the costly and complex process of moving data into a centralized system."

In other words, Metanautix is a firm that specializes in helping large companies filter through their massive in-house data regardless of the latter's type, size or location. The company claims that as far as data sources are concerned, there is no need to transform them and move them around in order to use them with the system. What is more important is for end users to simply connect.

Established in 2012, Metanautix launched in September 2014 after successfully raising $7 million. Its cofounders, Theo Vassilakis and Toli Lerios, had previously worked at Google and Facebook, respectively. What the company offers is pooling the vast data sources of huge firms and creating databases and business systems to generate useful insights. This method is said to be a whole lot cheaper compared to bringing all the data into a central data system.

"Metanautix started out with the vision to integrate the data supply chain by building the Quest data compute engine that enables scalable SQL access to any data," wrote Vassilakis in a blog post. "We look forward to being part of Microsoft's important efforts with Azure and SQL Server to give enterprise customers a unified view of all of their data across cloud and on-premises systems."

The acquisition of Metanautix is just one of the almost 20 acquisitions that Microsoft has made for the year. Most of them are geared towards the "cloud" such as Secure Islands, a cybersecurity firm and Adallom, a cloud security startup.
