While most virtual reality headsets currently in development feel like copies of one another, HTC's 'Vive' headset always stood out from the rest. Maybe it's the fact that its VR space is built around movement as opposed to simple head-tracking. Maybe it's the fact that it comes with two motion-sensitive controllers that feel like actual objects in the virtual world. Maybe it's the fact that, unlike its competition, the Vive doesn't feel like an extremely expensive gaming peripheral.

One way or another, there's no denying that HTC's headset has gained quite a bit of momentum in the ten months since it was announced. Developers haven't stopped raving it about, and the headset's presence at any trade show tends to become a marquee event - and CES 2016 is no different.

With just a few months left before its commercial release, HTC has revealed its second-generation VR developer headset: the Vive Pre. This isn't just a redesign for added comfort, either: the Vive Pre comes with a host of new features that actually manage to improve the already-impressive virtual reality experience.

One of the Vive Pre's biggest upgrades may sound small at first, but it actually makes a huge difference. A new, front-facing camera has been added to the Vive that allows for users to see outside of the headset without taking it off. Again, it sounds like a small addition, but anyone who's used VR tech before will know just how inconvenient it can be to take off a headset for something simple like sitting down or grabbing a drink. On top of that, the Vive Pre can also highlight specific real-world objects for use in the virtual space.

The Vive Pre's controllers are also a big step up over its predecessor's: not only have the controllers themselves been redesigned for a more ergonomic shape, but they run on rechargeable lithium-ion batteries - no more chewing through AA batteries on a daily basis. As an added bonus, they charge using simple micro-USB cables, meaning that you're probably already using a compatible charger.

Finally, the Vive Pre headset is a vast improvement over the first Vive models. Redesigned straps, better balancing, interchangeable interior padding and a vastly improved display are all standard features of HTC's latest headset. Long story short, no matter what your face looks like, the Vive Pre will fit comfortably on your head.

Sadly, the Vive Pre is still a developer kit - the full headset isn't quite ready for retail just yet. HTC has promised that the Vive Pre developer kit will be available in early 2016, while the retail headset is still on track for a April 2016 release.
