This was bound to happen. 

On Tuesday, Spotify launched its "Behind the Lyrics" playlists, powered by Genius, allowing its subscribers to follow the lyrics and annotations of songs. Within that announcement, Spotify is also making customized, Genius-annotated playlists available from artists such as DJ Diplo, rapper Pusha T and R&B singer Tinashe.

In addition, Recode is reporting that the streaming music service will also launch a Genius-powered "Behind the Lyrics (Hits)" playlist for Top 40-style popular music.

In a battle for users with competitor Apple Music, Spotify's new "Behind the Lyrics" is one extra feature the streaming music service can flex its muscle with over its rival.

The introduction of this feature also comes six months after Spotify debuted its "Discover" music playlist in July, allowing users to get a computer-generated playlist based on the history of the kinds of artists and songs that they have listened to in the past or are currently listening to.

Anything to stay ahead of the music streaming race, considering that Spotify counted an estimated 20 million paid subscribers, as of last June, and Apple Music is right on its heels, trying to close the gap, having recently crossed the 10 million subscriber plateau.
