Gamers who are looking forward to the upcoming Dark Souls 3 are in for a treat, as Bandai Namco has released several new high-definition screenshots for the role-playing game.

The screenshots feature a variety of aspects of the title, including new characters, locations and armor sets that can be found in the game.

The revealed images also included a new boss bearing the name Iudex Gundyr, who brandishes a long weapon resembling a spear and has dark mass exploding from its body while in battle.

The boss will be encountered by players as their characters are revived as one of the Unkindled in the Untended Graves.

Also among the images are the Firelink Shrine, which is the residence of the Fire Keeper, who will serve players in their quests. The area will serve as the starting point for the new players of Dark Souls 3.

Last month, Bandai Namco released a gameplay trailer for Dark Souls 3 that features a variety of action scenes and locations, with the environment similar to that found in Bloodborne.

"As the fire fades / Darkness has spread / And only embers remain / Embrace the Darkness," the text says in the video. Some gamers believe that the lines mean that the main character will be ushering in the Age of Dark, though another possible explanation for the words is that the player will be hutning down the Lords of Cinder.

The gameplay trailer also came with the launch date for the title, as developer FromSoftware revealed that Dark Souls 3 will be released on April 12. The title will be launched simultaneously on the PC, PlayStation 4 and Xbox One.

There is bad news for fans of the franchise though, as series director Hidetaka Miyazaki has said that he considers Dark Souls 3 to serve as the closure of the series. Miyazaki and FromSoftware are said to be looking to focus on other projects in the future to try new things, as opposed to pumping out sequel after sequel for the Dark Souls franchise.

Below are the screenshots that Bandai Namco revealed, with the first two images being that of Iudex Gundyr, followed by the Firelink Shrine and the rest of the images.
