Destiny players have a lot to look forward to over the next few years. Not only will the game get a major update in April, but players can also expect a new expansion pack by the end of 2016, with a sequel finally arriving in 2017.

Bungie announced all of this on its blog, starting with what fans can expect with the April update. However, please note that this update only covers those who have "The Taken King" expansion for the game: the update is free for those players.

Bungie highlighted some of what Destiny players can expect with the next update: New PVE Challenges, New and Updated Gear, New Quest featuring the Blighted Chalice Strike, Increased Max Light and Rewards and Sandbox and Crucible Updates.

The Blighted Chalice Strike is probably the biggest news here, although the developer didn't go into details about that particular quest. However, Bungie plans on unveiling more information about the April update on its Twitch channel with three separate presentations: March 23 at 2 p.m. EDT, March 30 at 2 p.m. EDT and April 6 at 2 p.m. EDT.

Also, in case you missed it back in February, Bungie outlined its plan for Destiny over the next few years, including the April update.

"Prior to the holiday break we mentioned a second, larger update slated for Spring," wrote Bungie. "That content release will feature a significant Light increase, a bunch of new gear to earn and equip, and new challenges for PvE players seeking some more fun experiences and replayability. Beyond that, the team is focused on delivering a large expansion later this year, and a full Destiny sequel in 2017. As work wraps up in the weeks ahead, look for more details about the Spring content, as well as more information about our bigger projects in the months that follow."

Destiny is an online multiplayer first-person shooter game launched by Bungie in 2014. It is available on Xbox 360, Xbox One, PlayStation 3 and PlayStation 4. The company released its first major expansion pack last year, "The Taken King." That expansion pack became the most downloaded game on day one in PlayStation history.
