Sony could be working on a PlayStation 4.5, which is fitted with an amped up GPU, according to a report.

Citing its “developer sources,” Kotaku reports that Sony is working on the next version of the PS4 equipped with “increased graphical power and games running at 4K resolution” – something the present version of the PS4 is not able to do.

The report says, though, that it is not clear whether current PS4 owners are going to purchase an entirely new piece of hardware or if they have to upgrade their gaming console to take advantage of the power boost. However, it adds that Sony reportedly commenced briefing developers.

Apart from supporting high-end 4K resolution for games, the enhanced GPU is likewise expected to add in more processing power. Such capacities would indeed put the console in a better position to provide support to the PlayStation Virtual Reality that is slated to arrive this coming fall.

With this purported upgrade, developers are also given a chance to put in additional effects along with other graphical tweaks to make their games look much appealing to gamers.

Although, it is still unclear at the moment if this Sony’s refreshed gaming console is going to bear the official name “PS4.5” or if it is just a moniker.

Is PS4.5 Really Coming?

Back in October, Sony Computer Entertainment Senior Vice President Masayasu Ito already said that the firm could consider pushing out a “high performance” version of the PS4 down the road. The company could implement performance tweaks on the console over time as the PS4 uses an X86 architecture.

During that time, Ito said Sony had no immediate plans in rolling out the high-performance PlayStation 4 model. He likewise added that the big question is if the company would actually build this thing.

The most recent rumor about the PS4.5 could, however, suggest that there’s a big probability that Sony could really be baking the improved gaming console.

We have yet to hear Sony’s official word regarding this latest rumor. Once the PS4.5 turns out to be real, rumor has it that it is going to be unwrapped at Sony's E3 press conference that is slated to be held this summer.

As always, take this story with a dose of skepticism.
