Nest has beun rolling out a 4.0 software update for their iOS and Android smartphone controlled thermostat Nest Mobile apps, along with added support for the upcoming Nest Protect.

The $129 Nest Protect, available for preorder, serves as a smoke and carbon monoxide detector. It will now be able to work with the app to check statuses for sensors as well as multiple units in a user's connected home. Nest Protect can let users know its last check on the system status along with the last user operated check, battery replacement and fire drill. There are even "What to Do" instructions during an event involving exposure to smoke and carbon monoxide.

Users will be able to switch between Home and Away without fancy phone maneuvering on the updated Nest Mobile. The thermostat will inform users on its activities through color in real time for example: black means "resting," orange means "heating," and blue means "cooling."

Quite Time is also a new feature added to the 4.0 update. Users with compatible home humidifiers and dehumidifiers can set specific times to override them. This means users looking for utter quietness can achieve that. The ability to select how much auxiliary heat used is available.

Released in 2011, Nest Learning Thermostat changed the way of lives of many home owners and is still as popular as ever two years later.

Nest CEO Tony Fadell said that the company may be interested in creating burglar alarms in the future.

"We look at it[burglar alarms] all the time," said Fadell. "We have to prove ourselves with each product and make sure that it is an incredible success before we move on."
