Verizon and Motorola haven't announced new Droid smartphones in over a year. That's about to change as a smartphone code-named Droid 'Quark' has just passed through the FCC.

Motorola has been having a busy September since announcing its new flagship Moto X, Moto G, and Moto 360 Android Wear smart watch. The company has been rumored to be getting ready to release a new Droid smartphone for Verizon Wireless in the near future and the handset is expected to be the Droid Turbo.

It appears that the new Droid is on its way to join Verizon's smartphone lineup in the near future, as the handset has just made its way through the FCC for certification to run on Verizon's 4G LTE network.

DroidLife received a tip from one of its sources that spotted a new Motorola smartphone with the codename 'Quark' passing through the FCC. The handset it listed as having support for LTE bands 4 and 13, which happen to be the same bands Verizon uses.

The Motorola Droid 'Quirk' is widely believed to be the Droid Turbo and it's going to be one very impressive smartphone based on leaked specs of the device. The Verizon Droid 'Quark' / Turbo is said to be slightly larger than the just announced new Moto X and its measurements show that it is 73.33-mm wide, 143.9-mm tall. The smartphone is expected to feature a 2560 x 1440 Quad HD display, just like the Samsung Galaxy Note 4, Galaxy Note Edge, and LG G3.

The Verizon Droid 'Quirk' / Droid Turbo will reportedly be powered by a very fast 2.65-GHz quad-core Qualcomm Snapdragon 805 processor, Adreno 420 GPU (graphics processing unit), and a healthy serving of 3 GB of RAM to keep things running smoothly. The smartphone is expected to ship with Android 4.4.4 KitKat out of the box and will likely receive an upgrade to Google's next version of Android in the fall, which is called Android L.

The FCC documents also confirm that the Droid 'Quark' will work with Motorola's new Turbo Charger introduced with the new Moto X, which can provide 8 hours of battery life in 15 minutes. There is also evidence pointing to this smartphone including support for wireless charging.

Once we hear any new information on the Motorola Droid 'Quirk' / Turbo, you can rest assured we'll pass the information on.
