Battlefield is set to return this year, with EA announcing that it will officially unveil the next installment in the long-running shooter franchise during a "world premiere event" on Friday, May 6.

Those who attend the event in person will be the first to see the new game. A live stream will follow, showing off new details about what is presumed to be Battlefield 5. According to the Battlefield website, creative director Lars Gustavsson and lead producer Aleksander Grondal will be discussing the new game and the history of the franchise during the stream, while also answering burning questions from fans.

The most recent entries in the Battlefield series have all been set during modern times, with the latest game, Battlefield Hardline, offering a cops and robbers spin on the franchise's formula. It remains to be seen if Battlefield 5 will adopt a similar modern military approach, but rumors have the game going back in time.

Specifically, a rumor that appeared earlier this year pegged the next entry in the franchise as being set during the first World War. Battlefield, as a franchise, began with Battlefield 1942, a WWII multiplayer shooter, so the idea of the series returning to a more historical setting isn't exactly far-fetched. Given that Call of Duty, Battlefield's main rival, continues to focus more on science fiction elements, perhaps it would make sense for DICE to set its game in a much earlier time period. No mainstream shooter has been set during WWI, so it would certainly make the game stand out among the ever-crowded FPS genre this holiday season.

The news of the upcoming Battlefield announcement comes just as the announcement for the next Call of Duty seems inevitable. Numerous leaks (and the apparent confirmation by the official Call of Duty Twitter account) seems to indicate that the next Call of Duty will be called "Infinite Warfare," and will launch alongside a remastered version of Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare. Rumors state that the game is set to be revealed before May 3, which, if true, gives Activision just a few short days to unveil the project.
