A new report indicates that Samsung has already begun developing the firmware for the upcoming Galaxy Note 6. The firmware is expected to be based upon that of the Galaxy S7, along with enhanced S Pen functionality and a possible communications hub.

Samsung is currently on a roll with the success of its recently introduced flagship smartphones, the Galaxy S7 and Galaxy S7 edge. The company's mobile division just reported robust operating profits compared to the same period last year, when the former flagship Galaxy S6 and S6 edge received a more tepid response from consumers.

The design and features of the new smartphones are enticing customers, especially those who were put off by the exclusion of the expandable storage option and removable battery on last year's models. The inclusion of IP68 certified waterproofing and dustproofing and an improved curved display on the edge models are also attributed to the interest in the Galaxy S7 series.

It appears as if Samsung is aiming to repeat its success with the introduction of its latest flagship phablet, the Galaxy Note 6, and a new report suggests that firmware for the device, which is now expected to be released in mid-August, is already in the works.

The rumored build number for the software is N930FXXU0APE1 and is expected to mimic the firmware of the Galaxy S7, along with features that take advantage of the S Pen stylus and larger screen. Recent rumors also suggest a Blackberry Hub-like communications center known as Samsung Focus will debut with the new phablet, and if so, Samsung's firmware for the device will reflect that inclusion.

We recently reported on rumors that Samsung is also testing a version of the Galaxy Note 6 that contains a curved edge display similar to that of the Galaxy S7 edge. The initial report claimed that Samsung will either be releasing a curved edge or regular display Galaxy Note 6 model, not both as it has done with its flagship S smartphone series for the past two years, but some reports are now expecting two separate variants for the Note 6. If that is in fact the case, the firmware for the Galaxy Note 6 edge display will likely be based on that of the S7 edge and differ somewhat from its straight-edged sibling.

If the firmware development report is accurate, that means the first Samsung Galaxy Note 6 models should begin production imminently. We'll be sure to report back as soon as images or any new details emerge.
