Psychonauts was earlier released in 2005 for the PlayStation 2 and was available on the original Xbox One and PC platform as well.

It was only late last year, more than a decade past, when a second installment was announced by the creators and earlier this year when the project hit its crowdfunding mark.

For those unacquainted with the game that most fans were happy to crowdfund to reach its goal of $3.3 million for a second installment, the story follows the main character, Raz, and his quest to join the elite group of Psychonauts through training at the Whispering Rock Psychic Summer Camp. Gameplay is classified under platformers where players have to navigate around obstacles and tricky levels.

On its initial release back in 2005, while Psychonauts had the wits and charm a classic game could have, sadly, it flopped in sales and canceled any plans for a second installment. The platform game niche around this time was still lacking in areas to successfully produce any games under the genre.

In more recent years, though, it's a different picture. Platformers seem to be making a comeback through recent successful indie platform games, setting the stage for a reboot of the title.

It would only make sense that Sony has included the original title in their next lineup of PS2 games to be emulated for the PS4 with updated graphics and a few enhancements to re-introduce the game to its established fan base and, at the same time, introduce the game to the current era of gamers.

An earlier announcement from the game company had most fans looking forward to this year's spring; supposedly, Psychonauts would be released around this time.

However, in a recent post from Sony on its PlayStation Blog, which details the next lineup of games set for a release on June 7, Psychonauts is nowhere to be found. Instead, a single sentence has changed the game's earlier announced release date to a "soon," previously, "this week."

"Update: Psychonauts is coming out soon, but not this week. Apologies for the error. Stay tuned for final timing!" writes the Senior Manager of Social Media at Sony Interactive Entertainment America (SIEA), Sid Shuman.

With only a few weeks left for springtime, there's still plenty of time to assume that the company will deliver on its promise and release a Psychonauts reboot "soon," before summer starts.

In the meantime, here's the game's official trailer posted on the DoubleFineProd channel:
