HP has lifted the veils off its cloud-centric Chromebook, dubbed Chromebook 11 G5, a device that comes fitted with an exciting feature: an optional touch screen variant.

Carrying a starting price of $189, the new HP laptop rocks a stylish, slimmed-down exterior along with a battery life of up to 12.5 hours on a non-touch screen variant of the device and up to 11 hours on a touch screen version.

HP says in a press release that one version of the Chromebook sports an optional HD IPS touch screen panel that boasts a Corning Gorilla Glass NBT to provide protection and to lessen reflection.

Another key feature of the 11 G5 is its smaller bezel plus lighter and thinner dimensions as opposed to previous models, as its weight only clocks in at 2.51 pounds.

In terms of performance, consumers should expect the device to swiftly launch different apps and quickly open web pages thanks to the Intel Celeron N3060 under its hood.

First Chromebook To Offer A Touch Screen Panel

HP is touting this device as the first of the company's 11.6-inch diagonal Chromebooks to be crammed with a touch screen option, which should give extra appeal to the device. What's more, this feature should be perfect when using one of the several touch-enabled Chrome and Android apps available on Google Play. These are said to work well with Google's Chrome operating system later this year.

Aimed At Students And Teachers

HP says this new Chromebook is particularly well-suited for classrooms as it is believed to meet the taste and needs of both the students and teachers.

"The demand for Chromebook in education continues to grow as schools take full advantage of the benefits of Chrome — manageability, simplicity, and security," said HP's product manager for Chromebooks, Anna Wu. "The functionality of Android apps — many of which are touch-centric — are adding more versatile learning experiences to the classroom with a host of new education-focused apps."

In its effort to produce more refined, user-friendly and durable devices, HP says it has worked with teachers and students to solicit their feedback and to figure out what they are looking for in a laptop.

As a result, the company has come up with Chromebook 11 G5, which not only boasts a slimmer design but also provides users more space on their desks. It is also said that with the device's smooth-curve keyboard design, wiping out dust is a piece of cake. On top of that, HP says this Chromebook is equipped with broader viewing angles for more collaborative, interactive discussions inside the classroom.

Release Date

As for HP Chromebook 11 G5's availability, the company says that interested consumers can snag one via channel partners beginning next month. This device is also poised to hit store shelves this coming October.

The 11 G5 comes after the release of higher-end HP Chromebook 13 in April.
