LG has announced that its next flagship smartphone, the LG V20, will be launched in September and will run on Google's upcoming mobile operating system Android 7.0 Nougat.

LG launched two flagship mobile phones in 2015 — the LG G4 and the LG V10. The company has already released its first flagship phone of this year, the LG G5, and now it has confirmed the LG V20 for September.

The announcement of LG's second flagship handset of this year should not come as a surprise. On July 28, the company posted its financial results for Q2 and it revealed the launch of a new V series smartphone soon.

"The launch of the new V series and expanding sales of mass-tier K and X series models are expected to improve the business unit's performance next quarter," says LG.

The smartphone maker confirmed that the next-gen LG V20 will come running on Android 7.0 Nougat straight out of the box. However, LG did not confirm any other details of the upcoming flagship.

The LG V20 should have enhanced features in comparison to its predecessor. The LG V10 sports a big 5.7-inch screen with a display resolution of 1,440 x 2,560 pixels. The LG V10 has two displays and the second customizable display is placed above the primary display.

"The Second Screen is separate from your main display and keeps your favorite apps, functions and notifications at your fingertips. Even when the main display is off, Second Screen keeps you informed with the time, date and notification status, extending your battery life," says LG.

It is likely that the LG V20 will also include two displays and will have at least the same display resolution as the LG V10.

The LG V10 came with a Qualcomm Snapdragon 808 processor and 4 GB of RAM. Most of the flagship smartphones launched in this year, including the LG G5, runs on Qualcomm Snapdragon 820 processor and at least 4 GB of RAM. Mobile phone enthusiasts will hope that the LG V20 comes with the Snapdragon 820 chip and maybe 6 GB of RAM.

It is worth noting that the highly anticipated Samsung Galaxy Note 7 is scheduled to be launched in early August. Apple is also expected to launch the iPhone 7 and the iPhone 7 Plus in September. These devices will undoubtedly overshadow any other device announced during these two months, which means that the LG V20 will face major competition from Samsung's and Apple's new offerings.

It remains to be seen if LG can do enough to attract smartphone customers to the upcoming LG V20 at launch.
