The HTC-built Nexus 9 is nearing an official announcement and the latest rumors claim Google will launch the tablet with preorders on Oct. 15 and price it at $399.

And not to let a month go by with no releases, Apple has scheduled a press event on Oct. 16 where the company is widely expected to launch two new iPads, iMac with Retina display, and Mac OS X 10.10 Yosemite. The stars of the show will likely be the iPad Air 2 and second-generation iPad mini with Retina display. We haven't heard much about the new iPad mini, but the iPad Air 2 has seen its fair share of leaks.

Leaked details and images of the iPad Air 2 claim the tablet will be 0.5 mm thinner than its predecessor due to its display and glass being laminated into a single piece, making it just 7.0 mm thick. The tablet will also reportedly feature a faster A8X processor, Touch ID Home button, and 2 GB of RAM, along with a camera updated from 5 MP to 8 MP.

Apple won't be the only tech company to unveil a new flagship tablet this week. A new report claims that Google will announce its long-rumored HTC-built Nexus 9 on Oct. 15. A recently leaked image of the tablet shows the slate will take on a square shape instead of the rectangular design of the Nexus 7. The source also claims that the Nexus 9 will be priced at $399, which is considerably higher than the Nexus 7's $229 price. The price increase is due in part to the tablet's larger 8.9-inch display and fact that "Google is aiming to bring a premium quality device to market at an affordable price."

The Nexus 9 will be the first tablet to ship with Android L, Google's latest and greatest version of Android, out of the box. Google will also match Apple's latest iPads by shipping the tablet with a 64-bit Nvidia Tegra K1 processor. The tablet is said to feature an 8.9-inch 2048 x 1440 display, 3 GB of RAM to keep things running smoothly, and will include 16 GB or 32 GB of internal storage. It also will offer Wi-Fi only and Wi-Fi + 4G LTE variants.

The source claims Google will begin accepting preorders for the Nexus 9 on Oct. 15 and the tablet will be released on Nov. 3. We'll be sure to keep you updated on all Nexus news at it becomes available.
