While much of the hype surrounding Pokémon GO has died down, Niantic Labs is still hard at work on the augmented reality mobile game. One thing that the developer might be working on for Pokémon GO is a Halloween event, which will surely get at least some hibernating players to once again launch the app on their smartphones.

Niantic Labs has not done events with Pokémon GO in the past, but CEO John Hanke hinted back in September that such gatherings, which would be partly social and partly competitive, could be coming soon to the game. Niantic Labs has been doing something similar for its other augmented reality game, Ingress, and so it is very possible that events will come soon to Pokémon GO.

The developer did say that it was waiting for the craziness surrounding the launch of Pokémon GO to subside before making plans for such, and perhaps Halloween is the perfect time for the game's first event.

The rumors that there will be a Halloween event for Pokémon GO started due to a cryptic post made on the official Facebook page of the game.

"With Halloween around the corner, we anticipate Trainers may encounter more Pokémon in the real world. The AR camera is a great way to capture and share these encounters with your friends!" wrote Niantic Labs in the Facebook post.

What could be in store for Pokémon trainers on Halloween, if there is indeed a Pokémon GO event for one of the most anticipated days of the year?

It is speculated that there could be some unique Pokémon that will spawn on Halloween. Players who capture unique Pokémon can then share their catch with their friends, who can try going to the location where it was caught to try and acquire it for their own.

It is also possible that, during the event, ghost type Pokémon will be everywhere in the world, with players seeing their maps filled with Gastlys, Haunters and Gengars for catching. Niantic Labs can adjust the spawn rate of Pokémon, and it would be very appropriate to see ghost type Pokémon swarming around the neighborhood on Halloween.

Niantic Labs might not be planning the event to last only on Halloween night though, as having Pokémon GO players scrambling in the dark to take advantage of the event could present safety concerns. It is likely that the Halloween event would last 24 hours, or perhaps even more.

All these are mere speculation though. Pokémon trainers will need to wait for Niantic Labs to make an official announcement for a Halloween event to know more details, assuming that there will be such an event.
