Thanksgiving Day is here, and people typically choose between spending some quality time with their loved ones in town and at home.

That said, families that decide to step outside this holiday better take note of what's open and what's closed, from the stores, banks and post office to retailers such as Target, Walmart and Best Buy.

Banks

All major banks are closed on Thanksgiving Day, but they will be open on Friday.

Government Offices

All government offices will be closed until Friday, including city, county, state and federal.

Post Office

As USPS says, post offices are closed, and no mail will be delivered to homes and businesses. FedEx is also closed, but it will resume providing services in modified hours on Friday, according to the company's holiday schedule (PDF).

Groceries

Groceries stores usually have holiday schedules they follow, and the exact opening and closing times will depend on the establishment itself. For instance, Costco is closed on Thanksgiving Day, while Whole Foods will be open but will close earlier than usual.

Target

Most retailers are up and about during Black Friday, as it's one of the busiest days of the year for shoppers and stores alike.

On that note, it's not surprising that Target is also participating in the holiday, opening its doors at 6 p.m. on Thanksgiving Day until 10 p.m., 11 p.m. or midnight Friday, as announced earlier this month.

Walmart

Not one to shy away from the competition, Walmart is going to be open at 6 p.m. and kick off its Black Friday deals as its doors swing open. Online bargains are already available, and it's going to last all day.

Best Buy

Getting into the holiday spirit strong is Best Buy, and it's scheduled to open its doors for shoppers at 5 p.m. with its in-store Black Friday deals available right off the bat.

The retailer will remain open until 1 a.m. Friday, and it's going to reopen at 8 a.m. until 10 p.m.

Libraries

Libraries are closed on Thanksgiving Day unless otherwise stated by the establishment.

Schools

All schools are closed until Friday, but this occasionally depends on the governing body.

Restaurants

Most restaurants are open, but take note of their holiday schedules before heading out to one. It's also worth noting that some even have some Thanksgiving specials on their menus.

Now that you have the schedule of opening and closing times of banks, the post office, Walmart, Target and Best Buy, you can now plan out your holiday the smart way.

With everything cleared up, be sure to check out some of the Black Friday deals that have been already revealed from Best Buy, Target and Walmart. Quick tip: there are Xbox One and PS4 bundles, Samsung Galaxy S7 units and iPad Pro models in the mix.
