Low Calorie Sweeteners Consumption Increases Drastically In The US
Low calorie or artificial sweeteners have steadily crept into the American diet over the last few years and now a new study reveals that its consumption has jumped to an alarming 200 percent in children.
According to the study, entitled Consumption of Low-Calorie Sweeteners among Children and Adults in the United States, which was published on Tuesday, Jan. 10, nearly 25 percent children and 41 percent adults are consuming foods sweetened by the artificial sweeteners.
This figure is a bump of an alarming 200 percent for children and 54 percent for the adults from 1999 to 2012.
"Just 8.7 percent of kids reported consuming low-calorie sweeteners in 1999 and thirteen years later that number had risen to 25.1 percent," says Allison Sylvetsky, lead author of the study.
Sylvetsky added that kids are not "alone in this trend" as many adults are also consuming low-calorie sweeteners (LCS) in a variety of food such as snack items, diet soft drinks and more.
The researcher believes that the findings are significant, primarily for children. Why? As previous studies have found a strong link between consumption of LCS and diabetes, obesity and several other health issues.
The researchers evaluated the data of nearly 17,000 men, women, and children who were included in the National Health and Nutrition Evaluation Survey from 2009 to 2012 and compared them with results of their earlier research from 1999 to 2008.
What Are Artificial Sweeteners?
Artificial sweeteners basically acts as a replacement for added sugar. The U.S. Food and Drug Administration has approved some LCS such as saccharin, sucralose, advantame, and more.
Important Observations and Facts
The study reveals that among all the artificial LCS consumers, almost 44 percent of adults and 20 percent of children takes LCS more than once in a single day. The study shared that the consumption of LCS tends to increase among adults whenever they gain body mass or obesity.
Nearly 17 percent of adults use these sweeteners in their foods at least thrice a day. The study suggests that most of these foods are taken at home and, therefore, even the kids have developed the habit of using sweeteners in their food.
Pain And Gain Of Artificial Sweeteners
The study reveals that there is an element of risk when it comes to the consumption of low calorie or artificial sweeteners. The major threat is that most of these sweeteners are basically manmade chemicals which is very harmful for human health and may lead to some form of cancer.
The artificial sweeteners are not real sugars so most of the time, they cannot satisfy the cravings for sweets people tend to have and which ultimately leads to overeating.
LCS have a little calorie compared to real sugar, so by using these people can enjoy the taste of sugar without any extra calories. These sweeteners can also be utilized in weight loss diets and has very little impact on the blood sugar unlike natural sugar.
