The Huawei P9 is finally set to get a taste of Android 7.0 Nougat soon, as the update will roll out by the end of the month.

The smartphone was initially supposed to get the software bump early this year, yet it's still running Android Marshmallow for now. On the bright side, the wait is almost over as Huawei India has officially confirmed that EMUI 5.0, which is based on Android 7.0 Nougat, is rolling out globally in the first quarter of 2017.

Huawei P9 Android 7.0 Nougat Update Rollout

With March being the last month of the first quarter, this means that the Huawei P9 will get its sweet Android 7.0 Nougat update by the end of this month. The announcement also features an image touting "Get ready to twiddle thumbs better on your Huawei P9," indicating that Android 7.0 Nougat will bring a faster and smoother user experience.

EMUI 5.0 is among the latest versions of the company's custom user interface. Oddly enough, it's not the very latest EMUI 5.1, but it's still based on Nougat and should bring a pretty sweet experience. The update package is also expected to include the latest Android security patch from Google for the month of March.

Huawei P9 Specs

As a reminder, the Huawei P9 made its debut back in April 2016 as the first smartphone made in collaboration with iconic photography brand Leica AG, and it stirred great interest thanks to its dual rear camera setup with Leica lenses.

The smartphone features a sleek metallic design, a 5.2-inch full HD display (1080p), a Kirin 950 processor, Mali T880 MP4 graphics, two 12-megapixel rear cameras, an 8-megapixel front shooter, a rear-mounted biometric fingerprint reader, and two configurations for RAM and internal storage.

The base Huawei P9 configuration packs 3 GB of RAM and 32 GB of native storage space, while the more powerful one sports 4 GB of RAM and 64 GB of onboard storage. Both versions support expandable storage, and a non-removable 3,000 mAh battery keeps it all up and running.

The Huawei P9 launched with Android 6.0 Marshmallow and EMUI 4.1 on top, so the update to Android 7.0 Nougat and EMUI 5.0 will be quite a big jump. Huawei P9 users in China already got the Nougat treat back in December 2016, so it's about time for the global rollout to occur.

Huawei even launched the Huawei P10 in the meantime, which runs Android 7.0 Nougat out of the box, but the older Huawei P9 still packs a punch and should get a significant boost with the upcoming software bump.

Android 7.0 Nougat and EMUI 5.0 should reach all Huawei P9 users worldwide in the next few weeks, but no official rollout date is available just yet. Huawei will announce additional details as the global rollout gets closer, and we'll keep you in the loop as soon as we learn more.
