The smartwatch market has just been stirred up, as Movado Group has announced its partnership with Google. The luxury watchmaker has announced that it will launch a range of Google's Android Wear 2.0 supported smartwatches.

Interestingly, Tag Heuer, another luxury watch brand, had announced that it would launch an Android Wear 2.0-compatible smartwatch in May. This may lead to an intriguing face-off between these premium labels.

What Is Movado's Latest Offering?

Movado Group is the owner of luxury brands like Tommy Hilfiger and Hugo Boss. It announced that these two premier brands have agreed to tie up with Google and will release smartwatches as well.

Such a partnership, therefore, is incredible as these nifty gadgets would likely provide a perfect blend of technology and luxury.

The smartwatch collection, christened as Movado Connect by the company, will be officially revealed at Baselworld 2017, an international watch and jewelry trade show. The show commences on March 23.

"The launch of Movado Connect marks another new milestone in Movado's longstanding history of creativity and innovation in watch design. We are very proud of our collaboration with Google and for the opportunity to provide our customers with an incredibly designed timepiece, powered by the latest, cutting-edge technology platform. Movado Connect, with our proprietary edge-to-edge crystal design, is iconically Movado," said Efraim Grinberg, Chairman & CEO, Movado Group.

What Makes These Smartwatches Tick?

Five smartwatches, running on the Android Wear 2.0 operating system, will comprise the collection. The watches are expected to hit the market this fall.

Although, the Android Wear 2.0 smartwatches have been largely kept under wraps, Movado has announced that these watches would support Android Pay and custom watch faces.

Android Wear 2.0: The Features

Android Wear 2.0 is a pioneer of the Standalone Apps feature. This means that the user will not need to keep their phone near themself all the time and they would be able to receive calls and texts through the smartwatch itself.

The second-gen smartwatch software also incorporates a Google Play Store app, which enables it to browse and download apps easily.

Messaging on the smartwatch OS is limited because of the small size of the wrists. Google Fit has also been integrated into this update, cheering fitness buffs all over the world.

How Is The Movado Collection Priced?

The watches will be available in the U.S., Canada, the UK and the Caribbean and will bear a price tag of $495.

Movado forays into the wearable space which is currently being ruled by Apple. The Apple Watch is one of the most popular smartwatches on the block and it will be testing times for Movado, as it aims to cement its place in the market.

LG is leading the Android Wear 2.0 powered smartwatch race presently thanks to the launch of its LG Watch Sport and LG Watch Style in February.
