The highly contagious viral infection called mumps can result in the swelling of the salivary glands and also flu-like symptoms, causing the person to feel unwell.

The Centers For Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), has reported several cases of mumps throughout the U.S since the beginning of 2017.

Few of them were a continuation from 2016, during which an estimated 5,300 cases of mumps were reported to the CDC, one of the highest recorded numbers in recent times. However, in 2017, around 1,242 cases of mumps were reported to the CDC on March 4.

"Because outbreaks of mumps are unpredictable, we don't know if this level in mumps cases will continue for the remainder of 2017," says Ian Branam, the spokesman for the National Center for Immunization and Respiratory Diseases at the CDC via an e-mail.

Reported Cases Of Mumps

Initiative To Spread Awareness

The measles, mumps, rubella (MMR) vaccines are the ones required to fight against this deadly disease.

Doctors posit that the best way to avoid affliction is to get vaccinated. Barring that the disease can be prevented by washing hands frequently, staying inside the house, avoiding sharing utensils and also proper sanitization.
