Grand Theft Auto 5, released back in 2013 by publisher Take-Two Interactive, is still enjoying massive success. The game, which earned $1 billion over its first three days, just recently broke the 75 million mark for number of copies sold.

However, with the title being 4 years old, fans of the franchise are already looking forward to when developer Rockstar Games will launch Grand Theft Auto 6. There have been several rumors regarding the anticipated game, but so far, Rockstar Games has been pretty quiet about it.

'Grand Theft Auto 6' Release Date

It has been previously speculated that Rockstar Games will release GTA 6 in 2018. GTA San Andreas was launched in 2004, GTA 4 was launched in 2008, and GTA 5 was launched in 2013, so with the gap of four to five years between Grand Theft Auto games, fans are expecting GTA 6 to be released by next year.

However, the problem is that Rockstar Games is busy with Red Dead Redemption, which is pegged for a release sometime this year. The studio might only be able to start working on GTA 6 after the second game in the Red Dead franchise is launched, which would not have the new Grand Theft Auto game ready to be released by next year.

Video game analysts believe that GTA 6 might not be launched any time soon, possibly with a release date of 2020. Such a timeframe will also allow Rockstar Games to develop the title to launch alongside the expected next generation of consoles that would be available by then.

Will The Wait For 'GTA 6' Be Worth It?

If speculations that GTA 6 will not be released until 2020 turn out to be true, it would mean that fans of the franchise would have waited for seven years for the next installment in the series. Will the wait be worth it?

Previous rumors claim that GTA 6 might feature a female protagonist for the first time in the series, as Rockstar Games cofounder Dan Houser said years back that the studio is definitely considering it.

Another circulating rumor regarding GTA 6 is its location. A report from March of last year claimed that GTA 6 was already in early development and had Tokyo as its initial setting. However, Rockstar Games had reportedly scrapped the idea for various reasons, including the franchise being deeply rooted in American culture. The studio had already trademarked Grand Theft Auto: Tokyo though, with other titles already trademarked including Grand Theft Auto: Bogota and Grand Theft Auto: Sin City.

Perhaps the most intriguing rumor regarding GTA 6, however, is that it could possibly put players in first-person mode, which would depart from the third-person mode that the franchise has used since GTA 3. It remains to be seen whether Grand Theft Auto fans will like it if this rumor turns out to be true, but it has to be noted that Capcom found great success in moving from the usual third-person view of the Resident Evil franchise to a first-person view for Resident Evil 7.

Not much else is known regarding GTA 6, and it might take a year or two before Rockstar Games makes an official announcement. However, if the rumors surrounding the title turn out to be true, it could very well be worth the wait.
