Bungie has officially announced Destiny 2 through a teaser image that was uploaded on the game's Twitter account.

The announcement of Destiny 2, however, comes to no surprise to fans of the sci-fi space shooter, who have known that the sequel to the massively popular Destiny is coming this year.

Destiny 2 Official Announcement

The announcement of Destiny 2 is in the form of a rather simple image with the logo of Destiny in front of a massive number 2, and what appears to be a scene of devastation.

A closer look at the image reveals that the background is actually The Last City, the metropolis that was saved by the Traveler, and there, the Tower is located in the first Destiny. It is unclear what happened to The Last City in between the events of the two games, but that is something that we will know as Bungie reveals more information regarding Destiny 2.

Destiny 2 What We Know So Far

Destiny gamers have been anticipating the announcement of Destiny 2 ever since Activision revealed last month in its earnings reports that the sequel will be arriving this fall.

Last week, several images of what appeared to be official Destiny 2 posters were leaked, revealing several details regarding the upcoming game. One important detail shown on the posters was a release date of Sept. 8 for Destiny 2, but the release date in North America will likely be different. The posters were leaked from Italy, and new games are often released in Europe on Friday. In North America, new titles are usually released the Tuesday before that, which means that Destiny 2 will likely have a United States launch date of Sept. 5.

In addition to the speculated United States release date of Destiny 2, the posters revealed that Bungie will be releasing a beta version of the game, similar to what it did for Destiny. The beta will be made available first to PlayStation 4 owners, similar to how the beta of the first Destiny arrived on the PlayStation 3 and PlayStation 4.

Unlike the first Destiny though, which was only available on the PlayStation 4, PlayStation 3, Xbox One, and Xbox 360, it is widely believed that Destiny 2 will also be coming to the PC.

One of the more concrete details regarding Destiny 2 is the fact that only the looks of the characters of Destiny players will be carried over to the sequel. Everything else, including gained levels, skills, currency, weapons, and gear, will not be transferred from Destiny to Destiny 2. This move was controversial as it sets aside all the hard work that Destiny players have poured into the game, but Bungie explained that this will allow all players, whether old or new, to start on an even playing field in Destiny 2, with the focus on new adventures to complete and new items to acquire.

Not much else is known about Destiny 2, though it is assumed that it will have the same gameplay as Destiny. While waiting for more details, Destiny players can go through all the raids of the first game through the Age of Triumph update.
