Samsung Galaxy S8 And Galaxy S8+ Breaks Preorder Records Despite Galaxy Note 7 Recall
Samsung's 2017 flagships — the Galaxy S8 and Galaxy S8+ — are smashing sales records all around the world. Similar to South Korea, United States is also breaking all major preorder records for the new Galaxy S8 and Galaxy S8+.
The U.S. preorders for the latest Samsung flagships have even surpassed those of Galaxy S7 and Galaxy S7 edge, the predecessors of the Galaxy S8 and Galaxy S8+.
Preorders of both the latest Samsung smartphones have already outpaced its predecessors, with a strong double digit growth of around 10 percent in the United States. This is an encouraging sign for Samsung as the two smartphones boast a higher price point when compared to the Galaxy S7 lineup.
The preorders for both the Galaxy S8 and the Galaxy S8+ in the United States went live in late March and the smartphones are set to hit the shelves on April 21.
Galaxy S8 And Galaxy S8 Plus Smash Preorder Records
Although both the flagship devices are finding favor with consumers in the United States, people are gravitating more toward the 6.2-inch Galaxy S8+ vis-à-vis the 5.8-inch Galaxy S8.
"The majority of consumers have been selecting the Galaxy S8+," said Samsung in an email to CNBC.
Another interesting preorder trend is the popularity of the Midnight Black hue over other available colors, namely Arctic Silver and Orchid Gray.
Both the Galaxy S8 and the Galaxy S8+ are doing phenomenally well in South Korea. According to reports, more than 550,000 Galaxy S8 units were preordered within a span of two days in the country.
The preorder numbers for the Galaxy S8 and Galaxy S8+ in South Korea are 2.75 times more than the Galaxy Note 7. It is roughly 5.5 times more than the pre-sales of the Galaxy S7 lineup in the same period.
In South Korea, the special edition Galaxy S8+ featuring 6 GB of RAM and 128 GB of onboard storage is more popular than the Galaxy S8 model. This shows a preference for the bigger smartphone in the region, just like in the United States.
For now, the special edition Galaxy S8+ is limited to South Korea. However, rumors are rife that the 6 GB of RAM and 128 GB storage model of the Galaxy S8+ model would be made available in China as well.
Galaxy Note 7 Debacle Not Affecting The People
Samsung didn't have a promising second half in 2016 owing to the Galaxy Note 7 battery explosion fiasco. The incident forced the OEM to issue a worldwide recall for the Galaxy Note 7.
After the Galaxy Note 7 fiasco, people were eagerly waiting for a flagship handset from Samsung. Moreover, after the revenue losses the company incurred because of the debacle, much is riding on the success of the Galaxy S8 and Galaxy S8+.
Thankfully for Samsung, the preorders of the Galaxy S8 and Galaxy S8+ suggest that the Galaxy Note 7 mishap has not impacted people's opinion of the company. The preorders for the smartphones bear testimony to analysts' assertions that the Galaxy Note 7 recall will not impact people from preordering the two flagship devices in the United States.
Samsung, however, is yet to spill the beans on the preorder numbers for the Galaxy S8 and Galaxy S8+ in the United States.
