Motorola announced the Moto G5 and Moto G5 Plus, during the MWC event in February. The Moto G5 Plus is the successor of the Moto G4 Plus and boasts some robust features. However, with the arrival of any next-gen smartphone, consumers are faced with the dilemma of whether they should upgrade to the newer device.

Which of the two smartphone's is worth buying? Here's a comparison of the specs and features of the Moto G5 Plus and the Moto G4 Plus to help make the decision.

The Moto G5 Plus comes with a full metal body and a front-mounted fingerprint sensor. The latest smartphone from Lenovo-owned Motorola is available in two shades: Lunar Gray and Fine Gold.

The Moto G4 Plus, on the other hand, has a metal frame and a plastic body. The device also houses a fingerprint sensor on the front of the smartphone. Users can choose between two color options, namely black and white.

Both smartphones weigh the same at 5.47 ounces and have the same thickness.

The Moto G5 Plus boasts a 5.2-inch FHD (1,920 x 1,080 pixels) IPS LCD display with a pixel density of 423 ppi. The screen is protected with Corning Gorilla Glass 3.

By comparison, the Moto G4 Plus features a bigger 5.5-inch FHD (1,920 x 1080 pixels) IPS LCD display with 401 ppi. It too is protected by the Corning Gorilla Glass 3.

The display on both devices are relatively similar, however, surprisingly, the Moto G4 Plus has a bigger screen. The smaller screen on the Moto G5 Plus may possibly dissuade some consumers.

The Moto G4 Plus comes with an octa-core Qualcomm Snapdragon 617 SoC and an Adreno 405 GPU. The Moto G5 Plus, on the other hand, houses an octa-core Qualcomm Snapdragon 625 chipset along with an Adreno 506 GPU.

The improved SoC in the new Moto G5 Plus is expected to improve performance significantly, when compared to the Moto G4 Plus.

RAM And Storage

The Moto G4 Plus is available in two variants. The first includes 2 GB of RAM along with 16 GB of internal storage. The second option contains 4 GB of RAM and 64 GB of onboard storage.

The Moto G5 Plus will also be available in two variants — 2 GB of RAM with 32 GB internal storage option and 4 GB of RAM with 64 GB of storage.

Both devices support microSD cards and the storage can be expanded up to an additional 256 GB.

Memory wise, both smartphones are almost on equal footing. However, it must be noted that the lower variant of the Moto G5 Plus no longer comes with 16 GB of internal storage as was the case for its predecessor.

Camera And Battery

The Moto G5 Plus sports a 12-megapixel Dual-Autofocus rear-facing camera with f/1.7 aperture and dual LED flash. The primary camera also has 4K video recording capabilities. The smartphone houses a 5-megapixel secondary camera with f/2.2 aperture size and selfie flash.

The Moto G4 Plus, on the other hand, sports a 16-megapixel primary camera with f/2.0 aperture and a dual LED flash. The device also boasts a 5-megapixel f/2.2 selfie camera.

Both smartphones contain 3,000 mAh batteries. Both also support Turbo Charging, which gives the handset 6 hours worth of power in just 15 minutes of charging.

Although the predecessor comes with a 16-megapixel camera, it must be noted that the lower aperture size of f/1.7 in the Moto G5 Plus ensures that the pictures clicked with it are much more vibrant and colorful than those clicked on the Moto G4 Plus.

Operating System

The Moto G5 Plus comes with Android 7.0 Nougat preloaded whereas the Moto G4 Plus shipped with the Android 6.0 Marshmallow. However, since then the device has been upgraded to Android Nougat. So, regarding the operating systems, both devices will provide a similar experience to users.

The 2 GB of RAM with 32 GB storage variant of the Moto G5 Plus is currently priced at $229.99. The 4 GB of RAM with 64 GB storage option will set users back by $299.99. The Moto G4 Plus starts at $249.99.

Both smartphones sport similar features; however, a better processor, GPU, and enhanced camera, make a compeling case for upgrading to the new Moto G5 Plus.
