Florida is notorious for its huge number of alligators. People residing in the state are always vigilant to avoid coming into contact with these dangerous creatures. However, even after such precautionary measures, accidents do occur.

A gator attack took place in Orlando, Florida, where an almost nine-foot alligator attacked a 10-year old girl while she was swimming. Miraculously, the girl survived without suffering any serious injury.

The Gator Attack

Ten-year old Juliana Ossa was swimming in the two-foot deep Lake Mary Jane waters at Moss Park in Orlando, Florida, which is a designated swimming area. Suddenly, the alligator came out of the water and bit the unsuspecting girl's knee and calf area.

At first Juliana tried hitting the creature; however, this did not bother the gator who held on to the 10-year old's leg. Following this, Ossa tried something which she said was taught to her at Gatorland.

"I used what they taught me at Gatorland, so I put my two fingers up its nostrils and it couldn't breath and had to breath from its mouth and then let my leg out," Juliana told Inside Edition in an interview.

Gatorland is an alligator park situated near where the incident took place. The tricks which Juliana learned probably saved her life. She received 10 stitches to her leg, but will make a full recovery soon.

Following the attack, park officials captured the creature and also confirmed that they would keep the park closed throughout the week as a cautionary measure.

"At 10 years old, to have that much wherewithal to do what she did is incredible," Tim Williams of Gatorland remarked post the incident.

Jordon Munn, an expert on alligators, said that people should try to make as much noise as possible when an alligator is attacking them. He shared that gators are afraid of humans and excess noise would discourage the creature from inflicting further damage. Munn even suggested that when attacked, people should try and poke the gators eyes and ears so that they can escape.

Similar Attacks In The Past

Countless number of people fall victim to alligator attacks each year. However, one such attack, which occurred almost a year ago caused the death of a two-year-old child. Lane Graves was killed when an alligator managed to pull him into the Seven Seas Lagoon at Disney World's Grand Floridian Resort and Spa.

The alligator responsible for the attack on Lane was put down after the incident to ensure such tragedies were not repeated.
