Smartphone makers are building devices that can pack in even more features than previous iterations. The most common examples of this is the inclusion of 6 GB or 8 GB of RAM in new premium handsets.

Smartphones are also incorporating a dual-camera setup for better picture quality and OEMs like Samsung, Apple, and LG have paid specific attention to minimizing the bezels.

The Samsung Galaxy S8 and the LG G6 are two of the most sought after devices released this year. Both smartphones are often pitted against each other to ascertain which one is better. However, the two Android devices were not pitted against each other in a drop test — until now.

YouTuber Ben Sin put the LG G6 and the Galaxy S8 to test to determine, which of the two is more durable.

LG G6 Vs. Samsung Galaxy S8: Drop Test

Sin uploaded a video of the drop test on his YouTube channel. In the test, he drops both phones several times before cracks start to appear. He also drops them on various surfaces to record their durability.

The test revealed that the LG G6 suffered cracks on the outer edges after the first few drops, whereas the Galaxy S8 did not show any external damage even after three drops.

However, Sin notes that the most integral part of a phone is its display and in this aspect, the Galaxy S8 performed poorly since the handset's display cracked before the LG G6.

Sin shared that even after all the drops, the LG G6's display bore wider but superficial cracks and these could not be felt when touched. However, the Samsung handset's display revealed significant cracks on the corners.

Why Durability Matters

The drop test revealed that the Samsung's Galaxy S8 is more prone to significant cracking on its display than the LG G6. This may be due to the Galaxy S8's dual-curved edge display. Experts opine that curved edges on a phone's display make them more susceptible to cracking.

The LG G6 has a flat display, which could be why its screen did not crack as quickly as the Galaxy S8's.

Accidentally dropping the phone is something which everybody has faced one time or another. With premium handsets such as the Galaxy S8 and LG G6, the accidental drop and the subsequent cracking of the display may prove to be a costly mistake. It is mainly because of this aspect that companies try to make their devices as robust as possible so that minor drops and accidents do not necessarily ruin the smartphones.
