The OnePlus 5 is one of the most hotly anticipated smartphones of this year and a new leak suggests that its release is just around the corner.

OnePlus made a name for itself by launching "flagship killers," i.e. high-end smartphones with powerful specs and features, available at a fraction of the price of comparable flagships.

The OnePlus 5 has been leaking quite extensively as of late and it's expected to be among the best Android smartphones of this year, and it now looks like it will make its official debut in just a couple of weeks.

OnePlus 5 Release Date

OnePlus already teased the smartphone's release for this summer, but did not mention any specific date so far. A purported internal email, however, has now made its way to Chinese platform Weibo and it hints at a June 15 launch date for the OnePlus 5. The email reportedly aimed to make the necessary arrangements to advertise the handset.

There's no guarantee that the leak is accurate and the OnePlus 5 will indeed debut on June 15, but it would make sense. Just last week, OnePlus announced that it has decided to discontinue the OnePlus 3T in what was largely interpreted as a move to make room for the upcoming flagship.

As a reminder, OnePlus caused a great deal of frustration in the past because it sold smartphones on an invite-only system, which meant that not all fans got the chance to buy their desired phone. The company later dropped the invite-only scheme, but continued to discontinue each iteration as soon as a new one hit the scene.

Next Flagship Killer Almost Here

With the OnePlus 3T now reaching its end of retail life, it's pretty much a given that the OnePlus 5's release is just around the corner. OnePlus has also been dropping teasers to boost excitement ahead of the big unveiling, and it's working. The latest teaser offered a sample of the OnePlus 5's camera prowess. The company also launched a contest that gives fans the chance to be among the first to test the OnePlus 5 and more than 9,000 people applied already.

The OnePlus 5 is rumored to boast top-notch specifications to go up against the Samsung Galaxy S8 and the likes, competing at the high end of the smartphone market. Rumored specs include a hefty 6 GB of RAM, a dual rear camera setup, a 3,600 mAh battery and more powerful features. Some rumors even claimed the smartphone would pack a whopping 8 GB of RAM, but that seems like a stretch. OnePlus already confirmed that its next flagship will pack a top-tier Qualcomm Snapdragon 835 processor, which also powers the new Galaxy S8 flagships.

If the latest leaked email turns out to be accurate, the OnePlus 5 will make its formal debut in just a fortnight and we'll get the official scoop straight from the source. Until then, it's best to treat all leaks and rumors with a grain of salt. As always, we'll keep you in the loop as soon as more information becomes available.
