Updates regarding the new Atari console, the Ataribox, have so far been mysterious and confusing, so gamers looking to get their fill of retro Atari action might instead want to set their sights on the upcoming Atari Flashback 8 Gold by AtGames.

At E3 2017, Atari made the surprise announcement that it was making a new gaming console, coming back to the video game industry after more than 20 years. The Atari Flashback 8 Gold, however, might steal the thunder of the Ataribox.

The Atari Flashback 8 Gold: Here Are All The Details

The Atari Flashback 8 Gold, created by retro console company AtGames, will come with 120 built-in titles that include Activision's Pitfall!, Taito's Space Invaders, and Atari 2600 classics such as Centipede, Millipede, River Raid, and Kaboom! The complete list of Atari Flashback 8 Gold games can be found in AtGames's product sheet for the retro console.

The console will also come with a pair of 2.4 GHz wireless controllers, which are designed to look like the original Atari 2600 controllers, along with a pair of legacy controller ports to connect optional wired joysticks and paddles.

The Atari Flashback 8 Gold also offers scan line filtering, 720p HDMI output, and a feature that allows players to save progress, pause, or rewind a few seconds at any point while playing.

The Atari Flashback 8 Gold should not be confused with three other Atari retro consoles offered by AtGames. The list of games available in each version differ slightly, but only the Atari Flashback 8 Gold offers HDMI output, wireless controllers that do not rely on infrared technology, and the save/pause/rewind feature.

Atari Flashback 8 Gold, Sega Genesis Flashback Preorders Starting Soon

Preorders for the Atari Flashback 8 Gold, which will carry a price tag of $79.99, will launch at GameStop, Best Buy, and Target websites starting July 28. The console is expected to arrive in stores in September.

Also launching preorders on that date is another retro console by AtGames, the Sega Genesis Flashback. The device, the design of which closely resembles the original Sega Genesis, will come with 85 built-in titles that include several Sonic the Hedgehog games, Mortal Kombat I to III, Shining Force I and II, and Phantasy Star I to IV.

The Sega Genesis Flashback carries most of the same features of the Atari Flashback 8 Gold, namely the wireless controllers, HDMI output, and save/pause/rewind capabilities. It will also be sold at $79.99 with an expected release in the fall.
