The Koenigsegg Agera RS has broken the world land speed record for production vehicles, with an average speed of 277.9 miles per hour in a Nevada highway.

The world's fastest drone set a record of 179.6 miles per hour, beating the Tesla Model S, though the Lucid Air is faster at 235 miles per hour. However, these speeds don't hold a candle to the hypercar that is the Koenigsegg Agera RS.

Koenigsegg Agera RS Breaks Speed Record

Koenigsegg closed an 11-mile stretch of Nevada's Route 160 between Las Vegas and Pahrump in its world land speed record attempt for a production vehicle. The state's Department of Transportation granted a special permit for the event, which took more than a year to plan.

The Swedish automobile manufacturer's efforts were not in vain though, as the Koenigsegg Agera RS successfully broke the record that was previously held by Bugatti.

With factory driver Niklas Lilja behind the wheel of the hypercar, the Koenigsegg Agera RS reached 284.3 miles per hour in the first run and 272 miles per hour in the second run, for an average speed and a new world record of 277.9 miles per hour. There were even reports that the Koenigsegg Agera RS actually unofficially hit a top speed of 291 miles per hour, though in the two runs, the official fastest speed that the hypercar reached was 284.3 miles per hour.

The previous record was 268 miles per hour, held by Bugatti which achieved the speed in 2010. This is not the first time that Koenigsegg broke a world record held by Bugatti, as it happened just last month. The 0-400-0 kilometer per hour record, previously set by the Bugatti Chiron at 42 seconds, was beaten by the Koenigsegg Agera RS with a time of just over 37 seconds.

The Koenigsegg Agera RS achieved the new record on Michelin Pilot Sport Cup 2 tires, which are also tires that regular customers can purchase.

The video showed the two runs of the Koenigsegg Agera RS en route to its world land speed record. From the looks of it, the experience is both an exhilarating and a terrifying one. Zooming at 270 miles per hour is an adrenaline rush matched by very few things in the world, but it is tough not to think that even the smallest problem at that speed can lead to a disaster.
