A comet seems to be getting larger each passing day in Fortnite Battle Royale, sending players into a frenzied theorizing headspace. What could it be? It wasn't there before, and nobody knows — yet — what it could possibly mean.

As of this writing, in Fortnite's skybox, there's a glowing orb-like element with a celestial tail. It looks very much like a comet, but there's no ruling out the possibility that it could be anything. The object doesn't appear to be part of the storm, but it's no glitch: the object clearly has animations, meaning it was deliberately added to the game by the developers.

A Comet Is Getting Larger In 'Fortnite Battle Royale'

Kotaku has several screenshots showing the comet getting bigger, and it's hard to argue otherwise. Many players have also noted its gradual change in size. Here is the very enigmatic comet, taken from user ChlorophyteFTW on the Epic Games forums:

When asked about the mysterious element in the sky, the developers responded with the infamous Ancient Aliens meme, suggesting, perhaps, that aliens are coming to the game.

Many players have taken to Reddit to make their individual cases as to why the comet is there. Earlier this month, one Redditor suggested that the game's Tilted Towers will be turned into a crater, and some seem to agree that that's what's happening currently. The idea is that the comet will hit the Tilted Towers. It's worth noting that it hasn't been on the game for very long, so the likelihood of it getting nuked is rather low. But who knows, really?

The comet could very well be a potential April Fool's joke, though, but its presence began much longer than this specific weekend.

The End Of The Season?

Fortnite is currently on its third "season," which started in February. This current season started after the second season ran from December to February. Some players argue that the comet indicates the end of the current season, with keen speculation on space-themed elements, like aliens, coming to the game once the new season begins. One user even speculates that "the comet is going to get caught in earth's atmosphere and create a mini event featuring a new map with low gravity."
