PlayStation 5 rumors that the next-generation console will be launched as early this year has been shot down by Kotaku's Jason Schreier, who said that the device is nowhere near ready to be released.

It has been five years since the arrival of the PlayStation 4 in 2013, which was launched seven years after the PlayStation 3 was rolled out in 2006. Following that trend, and Schreier's investigation, the PlayStation 5 release date will likely be in 2020, at the earliest.

PlayStation 5 Release Date Will Not Happen This Year

According to a recent report published by SemiAccurate, the PlayStation 5 release date may happen this year, due to the amount of development kits for the console that have reportedly been given out by Sony.

Kotaku's Schreier, who was looking to find out when the PlayStation 5 was really going to be launched, heard from two sources familiar with Sony's plans that the next PlayStation console will unlikely be released in 2019, let alone 2018. The sources said that multi-year plans for projects are always shifting, but it may be too much of a stretch to think that the PlayStation 5 will arrive this year.

Schreier also spoke with Sony's first-party studios and third-party developers to ask for information about the PlayStation 5. The people he spoke with have not heard of plans for the next-generation console, which should not be the case if it will indeed be launching soon.

What about the supposed PlayStation 5 development kits?

"Super early devkits are often PCs with the CPU and GPU," said one of Schreier's sources, who said that while early PlayStation 5 development kits may be in the wild, it does not necessarily mean that the console is launching soon.

There is also the matter of the PlayStation 4 Pro, which Sony released in November 2016. It is hard to imagine Sony moving on so soon to new hardware, when developers are still learning how to harness the power of the PlayStation 4 Pro.

Enjoy The PlayStation 4 For Now

Previous PlayStation 5 rumors have pegged the console's release date to as early as 2019 and as late as 2021, but Sony has so far not revealed any official information regarding the next PlayStation console.

Instead of figuring out when the PlayStation 5 will be launched, gamers should instead enjoy what the PlayStation 4 offers. Coming very soon as a PS4 exclusive is God of War, with Spider-Man to swing into the console in September.
