Here's some good news for iPhone 5s users. It looks like the iOS 12 might arrive on their devices amid expectations that iOS 11 is the last one.

Apple discontinued the iPhone 5s in 2016 and yet, the phone still received the iOS 11 update upon its release in 2017. The cut-off for the particular major OS release did not include iPhone 5, which led the many to think that this year's cut-off will not include the iPhone 5s.

iPhone 5s Might Still Receive Next Update

A small evidence that iPhone 5s could still get the latest update was found in the open source web browser engine WebKit, which is used by Safari and other apps on iOS, macOS, and Linux. Some of the comments made in the mailing list hinted that Apple has been testing the iOS 12 on the iPhone 5s.

Apple doing the testing on the 5-year-old smartphone could be an indication that the update will be released not just for the newer iPhone models but also for the iPhone 5s come fall 2018. Its 64-bit processor might enable it to handle the OS update, although, it is not a sufficient evidence to guarantee such conclusion.

Still, speculations that the iOS 12 is not as major as the other updates make it all the more likely. Some believe that the next update is only focusing on bug fixes and performance improvements that the iOS 11 failed to address. iPhone 5s users can definitely use these fixes, but these may still not address the major issues of a discontinued device.

WWDC 2018 To Showcase iOS 12 And More

While the iOS 12 is said to be more focused on the performance, it is still expected to introduce a slew of new features. It will likely bring Animoji, which the iPhone X first offered to the FaceTime app and multi-person support for augmented reality games.

The iOS 12 is expected to be showcased at Apple's annual Worldwide Developers Conference. The event should also include the announcement of the macOS framework that will reportedly make it easier for developers to bring iOS apps to the macOS platform. Exciting news about the watchOS and tvOS can be expected as well.

In addition, Apple might also debut some new hardware. Rumors suggest that a new and cheaper MacBook Air is being planned alongside new iPad Pro models with Face ID, another feature first seen on the iPhone X.

WWDC 2018 will kick off on June 4 and end on June 8. It will be held at the McEnery Convention Center in San Jose, California.
