Everyone knew that Bates Motel would eventually touch on the film that inspired it as soon as the series was announced. The original Psycho was an absolute masterpiece of horror and suspense, and while not all of the following adaptations and projects were successes, Bates Motel has proven that it is possible to use Hitchcock's classic thriller as a jumping-off point.

Now, with the show set to enter its third season next year, the inevitable clash between TV show and movie is drawing near. It's been a long time coming, but fans of Bates Motel may finally get to see the birth of Psycho.

A&E has released the first teaser for the show's third season, and it's not exactly subtle about where the story is headed:

Those who have seen the original Psycho film know exactly what happens when a beautiful women steps into the shower at the Bates Motel. The second season did a fantastic job of setting up Norman's split personality (which ultimately leads to the murders he commits), and now it's basically been confirmed that something serious is about to go down.

In addition to the trailer, Freddie Highmore - the actor who plays Norman Bates - has stated in previous interviews that "...In the third season, [Romero's] suspicions are aroused once again by a certain incident, so that uncertainty around who Norman really is sparks off again in his mind."

A 'certain incident?' Sure, it's vague, but it's practically a spoiler at the same time. Regardless of what happens, it seems like Bates Motel is getting ready to crossover with its film predecessor - let's see if the team behind the show can do the original scene proud.

Bates Motel is set to return to A&E in March 2015.
