After revolutionizing the rocket industry and making cars that can drive by themselves, what does a billionaire think of making next? For Elon Musk, it's candy.

That's right — Musk, the famed engineer and entrepreneur behind SpaceX, Tesla, and, most recently, The Boring Company, now wants to make candy.

"I am super super serious," Musk wrote in a tweet on May 5 after a series of Twitter users expressed incredulity over Musk's sweet plans.

Is Elon Musk Really Starting A Candy Company?

Not much is currently known about this notional candy company, let alone whether Musk is indeed serious about starting a company of such stark contrast to his other ventures, including cars, power walls, solar panel roofs, and colonizing Mars. He did, however, note that this project is "going to be amazing."

Musk also seems to be challenging fellow billionaire Warren Buffett, who owns See's Candies through Berkshire Hathaway.

What's A Moat?

During a quarterly earnings call last week, Musk dismissed the concept of moats. In business, a moat is a concept where a company maintains competitive advantages over its rivals to succeed.

"If your only defense against invading armies is a moat, you will not last long," said Musk, adding that constant innovation is what makes a company successful.

Buffett, however, is the champion of the moat concept. During a recent Berkshire Hathaway shareholder meeting, he responded to Musk's comments about moats, claiming that "there are some pretty good moats around." See's Candies, according to Buffett, is a company with a wide moat, since it boasts a loyal, entrenched customer base, which makes it difficult from rival candy chains to steal its thunder, Fortune notes.

"Elon may turn things upside down in some areas. I don't think he'd want to take us on in candy," he said.

After Buffett made those statements, Musk then tweeted about starting a candy company. It appears his statements are rather tongue-in-cheek, although he did tweet that he's serious about the project. It's difficult to determine what his actual plans are, as Musk has proven to be quite unpredictable in the past.
