The next-generation LG G3 smartphone is expected to boast a 2K resolution display.

2013 is about to draw to a close and rumors on the smartphones expected to launch in 2014 have already started buzzing. LG, which is one of the better known Android smartphone OEM, had unveiled its flagship smartphone of 2013, the G2, at New York City's Jazz at Lincoln Center on August 7, 2013, and now, rumors about its successor, dubbed LG G3, have have already surfaced, suggesting that it may launch in the second half of 2014.

While the LG G2 sports a 5.2-inch IPS LCD display with 1920 x 1080 pixels resolution, rumors suggest that the next-gen LG G3 will sport a 5.5-inch Quad HD display (2K resolution) with 1440 x 2560 pixels resolution.

Till now, no smartphone available in the market boasted a 2K resolution display. However, Vivo, a Chinese smartphone maker, recently announced the world's first 2K resolution display handset dubbed the Xplay 3S. The Vivo smartphone has a 6-inch display with 490 pixels per inch (ppi) density and the handset is expected to sell for a retail price of 3,498 yuan (approximately $580).

A higher resolution display in a smartphone, however, will mean more battery consumption. As such, OEMs will have to use a bigger battery in handsets with 2K resolution. A Quad HD resolution display handset may attract many customers but at this stage it remains unclear what advantage will it bring to smartphones, and if they will actually bring noticeably improved viewing experience than the current full HD screens.

Smartphone makers have had a busy 2013 and it seems that 2014 will be even more challenging. With the launch of 2K display, many smartphone makers will want to use the high-resolution display in their future handsets to attract more customers.
