Twitter is promoting something new and interesting that could compete with Facebook's Like button. It's the micro-blogging network's own Favorite button, but at the moment, the new feature the Favorite button brings to the table is not available everywhere.

The Twitter Favorite button is currently an experiment that can only be found available via the company's Android application. The button allows users to favorite tweets. This isn't exactly new to Twitter, but what's truly new here is the ability to also favorite user accounts.

As of now, favoriting an account on Twitter won't do much, though; users will get a push notification whenever a particular user sends a tweet. We can see how annoying this would get if one should press the Favorite button on the account of a popular celebrity who communicates with fans several times per day via the social network. Interestingly enough though, push notification is nothing new to Twitter, as the feature is buried in the settings section. What this does is make it easier to get notifications from your favorite Twitter personalities.

Bear in mind, however, that this experiment might disappear as quickly as it came, if it doesn't take off well enough, or the feature could eventually find its way to the iPhone and Windows Phone version of the Twitter application. Furthermore, the feature could one day allow users to show off their favorite accounts on their profile, according to CNBC's Eli Langer. This is something that has been done before by the once mighty and powerful Myspace, and is currently being done now by Twitter's Chinese counterpart Sina Weibo.

Twitter is always looking into new innovations or features to keep its users happy, doing things that will keep them coming back for more. The latest attempt by Twitter was Twitter Music; however, a report from Mashable back in October states that this new initiative might not live on for long. Twitter Music is just not working out, and this is very evident after the social network updated its Twitter and Vine app for iOS 7, but failed to do the same for Twitter Music.
