Mercedes-Benz is famous for its luxury and performance-centered vehicles with the best of German engineering, but it is a different story for its latest electric vehicles to get the best of it.

EV owners of the famed car brand are actually not getting the best of what they paid for, especially with the new subscription-style $1,200 annual payments to get faster acceleration for Mercedes-Benz vehicles.

Yes, you heard that right, Mercedes-Benz is charging its customers an additional $1,200 per year to get faster speeds for their car, something that is optional based on owner's preferences.

The Mercedes-Benz online shop has an electric vehicle add-on called "Acceleration Increase," and it is an annual subscription to improve a car's performance for an additional fee of $1,200. It is applied for Mercedes-Benz's electric vehicles, the EQ EQE and the EQ EQS models, as an add-on option from the company for remote updates.

According to Engadget, it is a paywall to the car's potential which are already available on the vehicle, one that would be available to users should they pay for it.

The report also said that Mercedes-Benz explained that these are software upgrades for the vehicle, one that would make it 0.8 to 0.9 seconds faster in its acceleration from 0 to 60 miles per hour.

Mercedes-Benz: New Subscription for Performance?

Yes, this new subscription is an annual requirement for users to improve their EV's performance and get faster acceleration whenever they step on the accelerator pedal.

Engadget's report argues that these capabilities are already available on the car, one that is being gatekeeped behind a paywall service to generate more money from users.

Car Subscription Packages for EVs

Subscription-based services are what make the world go round for businesses today, as almost any feature or service offered by a company sees the need for monthly or annual payments to get the premium offers. This also applies to cars now, and before, one thing that people could think of for these subscriptions is car insurance and the like.

One of the companies that started these subscription-based services for vehicles would be Tesla, particularly with its Full-Self Driving (FSD) subscription to get autonomous driving features.

Car companies are now charging users subscriptions for premium features they want to get, and Tesla was previously known for offering to purchase the FSD, as an extra option upon buying the EV.

On the other hand, BMW also offers a subscription to give users heated seats, and this luxurious feature needs monthly payments to work, apart from what users need to pay to power this feature.

Like Tesla, BMW, and other car brands with subscriptions, Mercedes-Benz is also offering one of its services centering on better features for the vehicle and improving its performance.

Users who casually use their cars for transportation may not need this, but for those who are meticulous about their acceleration and performance, well, this option is for you.
