The Hunger Games: Mockingjay - Part 1 has managed to become the top-grossing film of 2014, surpassing Marvel's Guardian of the Galaxy.

The movie only slightly took the lead over the Marvel film after pulling in $333.3 million in North America alone.

Guardians of the Galaxy could only muster $333.17 million, but we expect the sequel to be more successful considering its popularity just on its first outing.

We have to point out that it is the second year in a row that The Hunger Games has managed to walk away with the top prize in the North American ticket sales department, and the second year the movie has surpassed a Marvel film.

Iron Man 3, the other Marvel movie in question, could only gross $409 million, while The Hunger Games: Catching Fire walked away with $424.7 million. Some might find it very surprising that a Marvel/Disney film could lose out to movies in The Hunger Games franchise. However, that is because those folks fail to realize the power of a strong female lead.

Women from all walks of life are in love with Katniss. Iron Man 3 and Guardians of the Galaxy are films that don't carry such attractions, although we can't rule out the huge Disney fan base.

Marvel will have another chance to control the box office this year due to the upcoming release of the Avengers: Age of Ultron. The film is the studio's largest and most important project for 2015.

Age of Ultron will have to go toe-to-toe with Star Wars: The Force Awakens, a battle Marvel might not be able to win. The Star Wars franchise is huge and has a very large following that is loyal down to the very last man. We expect them all to come out and support the new movie, which is why Star Wars will turn out to be the largest grossing film in 2015.

Even if the movie turns out to be garbage, it will still go on to make a large profit at the box office without breaking a sweat.
