It's official, the HTC One 2 will launch on March 25 at special events in London and New York. HTC needs its new flagship smartphone to be a huge success if it wants to turn its fortunes around.

HTC made the announcement on Twitter Tuesday morning and began sending invitations out to journalists. The tweet gives away almost no details about the HTC One 2. It simplt says "Save the date," and shows the numbers 25, 03 and 14 in the background. It seems that HTC wants to reveal as little as humanly possible about the new flagship before it launches.

Still, we know quite a lot about the HTC One 2 already. The One 2 will most likely feature a 4.9-inch or 5-inch display with a Full HD resolution of 1920 x 1080 pixels. The smartphone will be powered by Qualcomm's Snapdragon 805 processor and come with 2 GB of RAM under the hood. The HTC One 2 will also reportedly have a dual back camera with 6-megapixel and 8-megapixel sensors, respectively. A 2.1-megapixel front-facing camera will be included as well.

Android 4.4 KitKat will come preinstalled on the HTC One 2, with HTC"s Sense 6 user interface on top. The One 2 will probably have a 2900 mAh battery, so it should get decent battery life. The smartphone will most likely come in two versions: one with 16 GB  of storage and another with 32 GB of storage. HTC is expected to make the One 2 with its signature aluminum casing and simplistic style, after all HTC's penchant for a high-quality build is one of the few things the company has going for it right now.

The exact price and availability of the HTC One 2 are still unknown, but since it has premium specifications, the One 2 probably won't be cheap. HTC recently announced that it intends to focus on mid-range smartphones in the future, but that it will also regularly release premium flagship smartphones like the One 2. HTC is banking on the idea that mid-range smartphones will generate sufficient profits to keep the company afloat. The continuation of a line of premium flagship smartphones seems like something of an indulgence, given the company's recent failure to connect with customers.

HTC is also reportedly eyeing the wearable market and may even announce a fitness tracker at MWC 2014. Now that we know for sure that the HTC One 2 won't be arriving during the tech conference in Barcelona, it seems more realistic to speculate that HTC might show a wearable or some other interesting device at MWC 2014.
