Hot off the heels of the announcement of the new MacBook with one single Type-C USB port, LaCie has announced an external hard drive that works through, you guessed it, Type-C USB.

The new Porsche Design Mobile Drive is one of the first of its kind, and will eventually be usable with more computers than just the new MacBook as more companies adopt the Type-C USB standard.

"The LaCie Porsche Design Mobile Drive features a USB-C plug - the user-friendly connector of the future," says LaCie on its website. "Both ends of the cable are identical and the connector is reversible, so there's no need to worry about which end goes to which device or about plugging it in upside down."

The drive will ship sometime in the next quarter with capacities of 500GB, 1TB and 2TB. The company has not yet offered details for pricing, however the regular USB versions of the drive run for between $80 and $150 depending on the storage capacity. It is likely that the Type-C versions of the drive will be similar in pricing.

For those unfamiliar with USB Type-C, it's essentially the new standard of USB that uses a totally new plug that is reversible, meaning no more guessing which way the USB is supposed to be plugged in. It is also able to carry enough power to charge a full laptop, and it's thin enough to be used on things like phones and tablets. Because of these things, it may well be the connector type that can do everything and will be adopted by everyone, especially if Apple is using it in the way that it is.

Also included in the box is an adapter to connect the drive with USB 2 and USB 3 ports, which will be handy for those who want to remain up to date with the latest technology but don't have a compatible computer just yet.

Like LaCie's other products, this hard drive features an aluminum enclosure, and users are limited to silver as far as color options go.

Because of the fact that Apple recently unveiled a new MacBook that only has one port, and it's a USB Type-C port that is also is used for charging, other hard drive companies are sure to follow LaCie's lead and release other hard drives with Type-C connectors.

LaCie generally aims its hard drives at consumers of Apple products, not just through the technology used, but also in the design, which is very sleek. This new hard drive is no exception.
