It was not an early Independence Day celebration in Texas. But the Midland Police Department in Glasscock County, Odessa just released a 48 second video of a series of controlled detonations of seized fireworks on Monday. 20,000 pounds of illegal fireworks set of over the course of three and a half days.

That's a lot of Boom!

The explosions were scheduled during the day time and caused giant plumes of smoke and dust to go up into the air. The Police said they did not want the controlled detonations to become a fireworks show and although some have suggested that they could have donated the explosives for upcoming 4th of July celebrations, it could not be done because they had a court order to destroy them.

But the fireworks did not go complete waste because, according to Midland Police, their bomb expert gained much knowledge and experience from the controlled detonations. And as the video shows, all the explosions were set off safely and without a hitch. Those experts really knew their stuff!

The destruction of the illegal fireworks was carried out by the Midland Police Department in cooperation with bomb squads from Odessa and Amarillo, TX, and the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives.

The illegal fireworks were reportedly seized during raids conducted by Midland Police although exact details of whom the explosives were confiscated from were not released.

According to the laws in Texas regarding the sale, possession and detonation of fireworks, most cities do not allow fireworks to be lit up within city limits or up to a certain distance outside of the city. And although some forms of fireworks may be purchased by consumers without the need for permits, in general, "bottle rockets" have been prohibited since January 2008. Fines related to possession of illegal fireworks can go upwards from $2000 per individual firework and more if a fire is caused, in additional to arson charges.

Midland, TX is located 317 miles away from Austin, or 300 miles away from Forth Worth. For the safety of the public, the controlled detonations were carried out "in a space away from any habitations."
