When The Golden Girls first aired, it was way ahead of its time. The show centered around four older women, all living independently — and as far as sitcoms go, that was completely different from anything else out there.

Of course, that's one of the reasons the show lasted as long as it did (seven seasons), and one of the reasons it's still so beloved today.

The show has been off the air for some time now — The Golden Girls ended back in 1992. There are plenty of people out there who have never seen a single episode, and after more than two decades, one has to assume that the show's popularity has diminished somewhat.

Even so, one fan was dedicated to honoring the show like no one ever has before: with a custom Golden Girls Lego set.

Yes, this is 100 percent real — user LostSleep has started a petition to create a Lego set based on The Golden Girls.

The Lego Ideas Lab, in which users can submit and then petition for sets based on any number of ideas, is currently being swarmed by Golden Girls fans. What started as a personal project has exploded across the Internet, as Golden Girls fans of all ages hope to have the show immortalized in tiny yellow bricks.

What's even more amazing is that the project already has all the support it needs. In less than a month, LostSleep's petition has already accrued the 10,000 signatures it required to move on to official approval. Does that mean fans can expect a Golden Girls set on store shelves in time for Christmas? Well, it's not that simple...

The project has more than enough fan support — but whether Lego will officially approve the project is another story entirely. Copyright could be the Achilles heel, as NBC (the network behind the show's original run) probably wouldn't take too kindly to the Lego set without getting a cut of the profits. The project's success could depend on Lego's willingness to negotiate terms, and there's really no telling what will happen at this point in time.

Hopefully, the project goes through. Even if you're not a fan of The Golden Girls, it's hard not to admire LostSleep's attention to detail. It's clear that a lot of passion went into this — and even if it's as goofy as a Golden Girls Lego set, that sort of dedication should be rewarded.

Plus, who doesn't want a tiny Lego Burt Reynolds?
