Mark your calendars for Sunday night, January 24, 2016. That's when The X-Files officially returns to episodic television.

As a major part of Fox's midseason schedule, The X-Files will see a two-night premiere, taking place on Sunday and Monday the 24th and 25th. The premiere on Sunday will air in the coveted slot right after the National Football Conference Championship game; the show will then regularly air on Mondays at 8:00 P.M.

The X-Files revival, starring original cast members David Duchovny and Gillian Anderson as Fox Mulder and Dana Scully, will consist of a six-episode "season" (miniseries is more like it) with series creator Chris Carter at the helm. A few other regulars are expected to return too. It's not known what story or stories the show will take on, but speculation is that Carter will take this opportunity to (finally) wrap up the alien invasion arc that followed the series across its entire original run.

Fox announced the premiere date this morning just prior to its "Upfront" presentation in New York City, an annual ritual where media and advertisers get their first look at new shows coming in the fall.

The X-Files is likely to be paired up on Monday nights with Minority Report, a high-profile new series adapted from the Steven Spielberg film of the same name. It's expected that The X-Files will run during a month-long(ish) hiatus for Gotham, which occupies the same timeslot.
